BIO
Ari Athans is a Brisbane based artist working across a broad range of mediums primarily in jewellery, painting and sculpture. Her background as a geologist has always informed her practice which gives her a deep understanding of materials and place. Geology, mineralogy, archaeology, topography, geochemistry combine in her work to resonate with a sense of the earth’s artefacts and it’s timeless processes.
Her sculptural ceramic works explore icons and fragments of civilisation within the earth’s strata only to be rediscovered and submerged once more.
The physicality of her painting process – building up and sanding back layers of enamel paint on mild steel allows for erosion, oxidising and layering, evoking the passage of both mineral and cultural time.
Ari established her eponymous jewellery gallery in 2004 on Brunswick Street New Farm. Since then she has been creating minimal contemporary jewellery that explores the nature of minerals and gems in exciting combinations.
Ari holds a Diploma of Arts in Jewellery Design from Sydney Institute of TAFE and a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Technology, Sydney. She has exhibited throughout Australia and internationally, and received Arts Queensland grants in 2000, 2002 and 2007. Her work is held in the Toowoomba Regional Gallery Collectio, Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital and numerous private collections.
Ari Athans is represented by Edwina Corlette Gallery
